Gartner Identifies the Top 10 Strategic Technologies for 2008

Among others Gartner describes i find interesting these two :

Real World Web. The term “real world Web” is informal, referring to places where information from the Web is applied to the particular location, activity or context in the real world. It is intended to augment the reality that a user faces, not to replace it as in virtual worlds. It is used in real-time based on the real world situation, not prepared in advance for consumption at specific times or researched after the events have occurred. For example in navigation, a printed list of directions from the Web do not react to changes, but a GPS navigation unit provides real-time directions that react to events and movements; the latter case is akin to the real-world Web of augmented reality. Now is the time to seek out new applications, new revenue streams and improvements to business process that can come from augmenting the world at the right time, place or situation.

Social Software. Through 2010, the enterprise Web 2.0 product environment will experience considerable flux with continued product innovation and new entrants, including start-ups, large vendors and traditional collaboration vendors. Expect significant consolidation as competitors strive to deliver robust Web 2.0 offerings to the enterprise. Nevertheless social software technologies will increasingly be brought into the enterprise to augment traditional collaboration.

Augmented reality is probably the real revoulution in the next few years. Amplifing our sense and introduce real time data in our perception, based on our location. It’s already happening with some experimental tourist guides and geo tagging.

Think you have a device (mobile phone with gps for example) and you receive information related to the place you are or related to your friend’s position. It’a already happening. Call it LBS (location based services) .

Facebook has announced its much hyped advertising strategy. As reported by readwriteweb:

Facebook’s ad strategy has three main components:

Business pages – Businesses can build profile pages on Facebook that users can interact with. I’m not sure what the benefit is here over the Facebook sponsored groups that businesses have been paying large fees to have for months. 100,000 business pages supposedly launched today, though.

Social Ads and Beacon – Ads targeted by user profile data — everything from favorite music to relationship status, and the ability for people to publish product interactions from third-party sites to their news feed .

Insight – Marketing and usage metrics for advertisers about who is clicking on their ads and how to better target them.

Missed the occasion to create the new AdSense and what about the use of personal information to target ad? (well, google is already doing it ?). Nothing new in business model. What about giving back someyhing back to content generators? (I.E. users).

Social advertising? What is it exactly? Just advertising on user generated content? or there is something more?

Waiting for next generation online advertising.

Google is announcing a way for programmers to build social applications for multiple Web sites at once.

It’s a set of common application programming interfaces (APIs) that will enable developers to create applications for social networks, blogs and any Web sites that accept the OpenSocial code. Currently, developers have to write new programs for each site, even if the functionality will be the same on each site.

It’s another killer app from Google. The timing and strategy are perfect. Is it the way to an integrated social network?

I have recently read some posts from Luca Conti, Luca Filigheddu, Robert Scoble, and Giacomo Vacca regarding the coverage of web 2.0 sites, companies, start-up by Californian bloggers and the rest of the world.

I’m exploring the web 2.0 since a while and i try to write about web 2.0 companies (far less than i would) on this blog.

I read blogs and websites from all over the world (in English and Italian) and could find good coverage in Europe as well as in US.

Some considerations:

The number of new companies is spread all over the world but the number is US is far bigger.

I suppose a blogger posts first about the world around himself. And considering the number of new start-up in web 2.0 there’s a lot to talk in US.

It’s easier to be noted if you have a reputation

A good launch strategy could make the difference.

On the other hand:

Starting up in US does not mean to launch a better service but, for sure, to have a better context, larger potential audience and more funding possibilities.

Relation (also economics) can have a major role in influencing ideas. (it’s life, also bloggers or journalists are real people). How much influence could became the problem.

I don’t have a final world if Robert ignored Hictu and why or if California bloggers speaks only about US companies, but I try to build a strategy for launching my new web 2.0 company.

Build the best service as possible, solving a need (or create and solve one)

Try to “have relation” with the people that can help you to build a better service and authority in the related world , indipendently if it is in US or EU or wherever. (but audience matters).

For funding read Guy‘s blog (in Italy, do it yourself)

Build your audience

Think how monetize before starting

Waiting other advices from gurus….

I’m Italian and I understand the rage and frustration of Luca F. and Giacomo. I would start my company in Italy and i’m worried. Thanks to have raised the point. Have some attention on critical matters is always good.

In an apparent about-face, Apple Inc. will allow third-party applications to work directly on the iPhone, Chief Executive Steve Jobs said in a posting on the company’s Web site Wednesday.

A software development kit will let coders create applications to work directly on the iPhone.

Apple infuriated developers and some iPhone users when it issued a software update September 27 that disabled unofficial programs installed on the handsets.

Until Wednesday, Apple had tried to control which applications consumers had on their iPhones.

Now, Jobs said the company intends to release a software development kit in February that will let coders create applications to work directly on the iPhone and the iPod Touch. The Touch is the new iPod portable player that resembles the iPhone but lacks the function of a cell phone.

“We are excited about creating a vibrant third-party developer community around the iPhone and enabling hundreds of new applications for our users,” Jobs said in the posting.

Finally the right choice. Well done, Steve.

It’s a few minutes that a breaking news is spreading over the internet.

A 13-year-old hacker claims to have developed code that would let you put third-party applications on an iPod Touch without having to take a computer science class.

AriX ha developed iJailbreak, an automated program that allows third-party applications to run on the iPod Touch.

Ever since Apple released the 1.1.1 software update for both the iPhone and the iPod Touch in late September that broke older third-party application installers, hackers have been hard at work searching for a new way to bypass the restrictions. A preliminary jailbreaking application was released last week, but it required a great deal of expertise to get up and running. Erica Sadun, a writer for The Unofficial Apple Weblog, installed that iPod Touch jailbreak Friday evening but warned, “This is not ready for prime time, kids. Don’t do this at home.”

Apple gives the possibility to install web apps developed for the iPhone and the iPod Touch according to guidelines and specific user interface. Well I guess we will have news on these side and in the future software updates for these devices. At leastI hope. Probably exists a market strategy with new devices with more features and more “open” to third-party application. But what about the early owners? Another “price reduction” case? And do the iPod Touch and iPhone users really want to run third-party application? Well, yes I guess. So why don’t buy a pda?
